French Bulldog Food Calculator: Calories and Portions
Estimate how many calories your French Bulldog needs each day and turn them into cups or grams of your dog's own food. Based on the formula veterinarians use as a starting point.
Enter your Frenchie's weight to see the estimate.
This is a starting point, not a prescription. Individual dogs can need about 30% more or less. Weigh your dog and check body condition every few weeks and adjust, and ask your vet, especially for puppies, weight loss or any health condition.
How the calculator works
Veterinarians often start with a dog’s resting energy requirement (RER), the calories needed at rest, and then multiply it by a factor for life stage and activity. The calculator uses the standard formula:
RER = 70 × (body weight in kg)0.75
For example, a 12 kg (26 lb) Frenchie has an RER of about 450 kcal a day. As a spayed or neutered adult (factor 1.6), that gives about 720 kcal a day as a starting point.
| Life stage or activity | Factor × RER | Sources |
|---|---|---|
| Puppy, under 4 months | 3.0 | AAHA, Merck Veterinary Manual, Ohio State VMC |
| Puppy, 4 months to adult size | 2.0 | AAHA, Merck Veterinary Manual, Ohio State VMC |
| Adult, spayed or neutered | 1.6 (published range 1.4–1.6) | AAHA, Merck Veterinary Manual, Ohio State VMC |
| Adult, not spayed or neutered | 1.8 (published range 1.6–1.8) | AAHA, Merck Veterinary Manual, Ohio State VMC |
| Less active or gains weight easily | 1.2 (published range 1.0–1.4) | AAHA, Merck Veterinary Manual, Ohio State VMC, WSAVA |
| Weight loss (target weight, with your vet) | 1.0 | AAHA, Ohio State VMC |
| Active adult | 1.8 (published range 1.6–2.0) | AAHA, Ohio State VMC, WSAVA |
Where sources disagree, the calculator uses the commonly cited default and shows the published range alongside it.
How to use the result
- Treat it as a starting point. Calorie formulas are estimates, and individual dogs can need about 30% more or less than calculated.
- Watch body condition, not just the scale. Adjust portions to keep your Frenchie at a healthy body condition score: ribs easy to feel under a thin layer of fat, a visible waist from above. See our French Bulldog weight chart.
- Keep treats to 10%. Treats, chews and table food should be no more than 10% of daily calories, so the calculator shows your main food as 90% of the total.
- Use your food’s own calorie numbers. Foods vary a lot in calories per cup. The calorie content (kcal per cup and kcal per kg) is printed on the bag in the US.
- Less active, indoor or older dogs may need fewer calories than these factors suggest.
- Weight loss should be planned with your vet, using your dog’s target weight rather than current weight.

Vet note: This calculator gives a general estimate for healthy dogs. Puppies, pregnant or nursing dogs, dogs on weight-loss plans and dogs with any medical condition need a feeding plan from a veterinarian.
FAQ
How many calories does a French Bulldog need per day?
It depends on weight, age and activity. As a rough guide, a healthy 12 kg spayed or neutered adult needs somewhere around 540 to 720 kcal a day: WSAVA’s chart for a 12 kg adult gives 540–677 kcal, and the RER formula with a 1.6 factor gives about 720 kcal. Adjust by body condition.
How many cups should my French Bulldog eat?
Divide your dog’s daily calories by the kcal per cup printed on your food. Because foods differ, the same dog might need very different cup amounts on two brands. The calculator does this for you.
Why does the calculator give a different number than the bag?
Feeding guides on bags are broad averages for all dogs of a weight. The calculator adjusts for life stage and activity. Both are starting points: your dog’s body condition tells you which way to adjust.
Can I use this for a puppy?
It gives a general estimate for growing puppies, but puppy needs change quickly. Weigh regularly, follow your vet’s advice and see our feeding schedule for how many meals to give.
